Travel safely on an eBike: 5 tips

Test ride

Before you head out on the road, it's a good idea to take your eBike for a test ride. Choose a place with little traffic, for example a car park. During your test ride, pay attention to two things:

  • Because of the relatively high speed, good brakes are a must. Test them thoroughly.
  • Feel whether you have enough grip in the bends. Is that not the case? Then check the tyre pressure. The minimum and maximum pressure for each model is indicated on the outside of the tyres. With an eBike, bear in mind that the drive system and battery add extra weight. The tyre pressure should therefore be slightly higher than on a conventional bike.

Ride with foresight

With an eBike, you can ride up to four kilometres per hour faster than with a conventional bike. Be aware of this, estimate the traffic on the road well in advance and adjust your speed in time to avoid dangerous situations.

Brake correctly

An eBike weighs more than a conventional bicycle. The braking distance is therefore longer. The shortest possible braking distance is obtained by using the front and rear brake at the same time. The surface also has an influence: especially on snow, mud or gravel, you should use the front brake in moderation.

Cornering technique

Always keep your eyes on the road and actively move your head and upper body in the direction of the bend. Practise your cornering technique both in stop-and-go traffic at medium speed and at high speed.

Overcoming obstacles

In general, the following applies: it is best to ride up curbs crosswise. The best way to keep youreBike under control is to give the front wheel free play. You move your upper body towards the handlebars just before the curb and pull your body weight upwards. Do not pull on the handlebars too violently. This movement requires a certain routine. If you feel insecure or if the obstacle is too high, take a break.
