Fietsersbond app

Report problems on the road with the Fietsersbond app

The Fietsersbond, VRT and HYPE launched the Fietsersbond app on 19 October. Via the app, cyclists can keep each other informed about a problem on their bicycle route. The reports also reach the VRT (Flemish Radio & TV) traffic department. The latter evaluates them and includes them in the radio traffic bulletin.

In Flanders, a real cycling revolution is taking place. More and more people cycle to work to avoid traffic jams. However, traffic announcements on the radio and online are limited to information for car drivers. For cyclists, there are no traffic reports as yet. However, this has added value for them as well. If cyclists know more about the situation on bicycle paths, this may contribute to greater traffic safety and fewer cycling accidents.

That is why the Fietsersbond developed an app in collaboration with its digital partner HYPE and the VRT. Via the app, cyclists on the move report a temporary or sudden problem on the road. Examples are a closed cycle route, a fallen tree, road works, diversions or slippery cycle paths.

After the report, an icon becomes visible to all users on the map in the app. The report also reaches the VRT editors. They assess the reports and include them in the radio traffic bulletin. Cyclists who use the app or listen to the bulletin can adjust their cycling route to work or school, e.g. to avoid closed or slippery cycle paths.
